Edirne(Turkey) - Orestiada (Greece )

Hi guests!

Since my childhood,i was always wondering Edirne and what's going on nextside of the border. On December,2017 ,i decided to visit this city and had 9 hours trip by bus.Let's discover my trip together!

I'm not going to give you information about Edirne's history deeply. But there are few keywords that you should know.It was always an important city especially during the Ottoman Empire.
Selimiye Mosque is the most known symbol of the city.Saraçlar Street is one of the oldest and famous streets in the city.At the end of Saraçlar Street,a bazaar is welcoming you.The old and beautiful buildings in the street took me to old times on my mind.By it's location, people from different religions and nations lived together, also the situation is same today.

Another representer of the city is 'Fried liver'.Some people say it has a secret recipe,i don't know about this so i can't tell anything certain. But i can say that it's very delicious. If you visit Edirne, you should definitely try Fried Liver.
I normally i don't like sharing food photos but i just wanted to show how it looks like.Sorry if caused hunger crisis. You can find many restaurants to eat that food.
By the way,you can find Almond Kavala Cookies in Edirne.I didn't visit Kavala before and i didn't eat that cookies in their own land. But some people said that it's taste is very close. So you can try this if you like.Sorry,i didn't take cookies' photos.

Edirne is also known as city of water.Meriç and Tunca Rivers proves where this name comes from.
You will also see the bridges on rivers. The way goes through Karaağaç village which is the last village before Turkish-Greek border. There were few cafés around river.View is nice, you should take photos there.
Karaağaç is small but charming village. The beautiful designed houses of the village are always protected by villagers as far as i saw. Both in Edirne and Karaağaç,local people were always friendly and helpful. If you have time, you should drink a Turkish coffee in Karağaaç.Also you can ride bicycle easily because almost there are no hills.
As a crazy traveler,i wanted to walk through border and at the half of the way the reeve of the village offered me to take to the border. On the way,we talked about village and his projects. After the passport control, you have to walk to reach Greek customs around 7-8 minutes. The point is located where the Greek village Kastanies starts.

I arrived Kastanies and i saw only few people around. At the square of village i found a cafe and had a cup of coffee while waiting the bus to Orestiada city. The bus take the passengers from square, you can buy your bus tickets from the gas station. The bus trip takes around 15-20 minutes and leaves you at their office which is very close to Orestiada's center by walk.
In Orestiada,i had 1,5 hours to see around because i bought return ticket earlier. The city is nice. You can discover it's calm streets, you can see the Church. At the end the best thing is to eat something in the center. The people in Orestiada were also kind and helpful.I had "Gyros" to get rid of my hunger and it was really delicious.I'm sure there are more places to discover in Edirne and Orestiada but i tried to see wherever i can on my limited time.

On the other hand,Trakya University in Edirne is definitely a good point to study. The city has a big student population and it makes the city always alive.

Edirne has another border with Bulgaria. But i didn't have time to visit there.
Thanks for reading and joining my journey on your mind.
